Botanical Projects

Work in progress.

  • Developing techniques in Nurturing Torrey Pines (Pinus Torreyana)

The Torrey Pines is an endangered species of pine that is endemic to California’s Costal regions. Currently I am working on understanding the length of stratification required by Torrey Pine seeds prior to seed germination.

  • Conferring Triploid Chromosomes onto Heirloom Watermelons

Select plants bearing a Triploid set of chromosomes are able to bear seedless fruit. Watermelons are no exception. Currently I am attempting to create seedless strains of heirloom watermelon. This will be done by exposing heirloom seedlings to Dinitroaniline to induce a tetraploid Heirloom seedling. This seedling will then breed with a diploid heirloom watermelon to create triploidal (seedless) offspring

  • Growing a Three-Sisters-Garden

The three sisters garden is a farming technique used by the indigenous people of America. The technique revolves around Corn, Beans, Squash and the synergistic relationship that each crop provides to each other. The corn provides structure for the beans to climb on, the squash retains soil moisture, and the beans fixate nitrogen so that it is more bioavailable.
